This statement print is a composite of Albumen photography and miniature metal horse figures. It is hand touched with watercolor pencil and gouache.

In this composition, Johnny foreigner, the central figure in the square on horseback, sets up an unlawful homestead in Piazzetta di San Marco, Venice. It is not part of the piazza, rather a strategic place that adjoins the open space connecting the south side of the piazza to the waterway of the lagoon. Imagine it's midnight and enemy lines are drawn for a caught-in-action showdown. The lawless claim the square, and build wood fences along the waterfront. The lion symbol branded on the front of their fort is inspired by Napoleon’s reign over Venice.

The Lion was taken to France after Napoleon's conquest of the Venetian Republic, during his 1797 campaign in Italy. In this case, the lion is stripped of its high status, demoted to that of cattle. This is juxtaposed by the winged Lion of Venice seen perched on the large granite column, which as come to symbolize the city and its patron saint, "St. Mark". In Christian tradition, a lion, a figure of courage and monarchy, symbolizes Mark the Evangelist, the author of the second gospel.

Inside the mind of

Design By Authority

As a conceptual digital artist I was inspired to create the brand Design by Authority to showcase mixed media artworks... I imagine my interpretation without being hindered by the historical reality. I use references and ideas that are so integrated into the process of the composition of the work that they may escape those who do not take the time to explore how and why these images resonate with the viewer, like a good film, long after you’ve seen them.
